Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, May 12, ending a 14-year legacy of 9,230 runs and 40 Test wins. Learn about his journey, reasons and the impact he had on Indian cricket.

Indian cricket star batsman and former captain Virat Kohli Retirement has announced from Test cricket. The 36-year-old shared Virat Kohli Retirement the decision on his Instagram handle on May 12 with an emotional post that left fans and former cricketers stunned. With 14 years, 123 Tests, 9,230 runs and 40 Test wins, Kohli has not only set records but also taken Indian Test cricket to new heights.

Virat Kohli made his Test debut against the West Indies at Kingston on 20 June 2011. He got off to a slow start—he scored only 4 and 15 in the first Test—but his talent soon shone through. Innings of 52 and 63 against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in late 2011 announced his arrival.

Virat Kohli Retirement: Kohli is India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, behind only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,265) and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122). Under his captaincy, India won their first Test series in Australia in 2018–19 and topped the ICC Test rankings.
Kohli’s aggression, fitness and passion for winning gave a new dimension to Indian Test cricket. But has his batting been as effective in recent years? Critics say that his average after 2020 has been 30.72, which is much lower than his golden period (2016-19, average 66.59).

Virat Kohli Retirement Kohli wrote in his retirement announcement, “14 years ago when I first wore the blue cap of Test, I never imagined that this format would take me on such a journey. is ne majhe aazmaya, majhe shakl di or majhe zandgi bhar ke sabiq sakhaye.

    Why did you take sanyaas?

Virat Kohli has retired from Test cricket for many reasons. There is a strategy behind this. Know some special reasons.

Recent dip in form: On the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia, Kohli scored only 190 runs after a century (100*) in Perth, averaging 23.75. He was dismissed 8 out of 10 times to balls outside the off-stump, exposing his technical weakness.

Rohit Sharma’s retirement: Kohli’s close friend and captain Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket on May 7. According to sources, the lack of excitement in Test cricket without Rohit could be one of the reasons for Kohli’s decision. Rohit’s retirement put a lot of mental pressure on him.

Beginning of a new era: Kohli had expressed his desire to retire to the BCCI in April itself. Shubman Gill is likely to be made the captain for the upcoming five-Test series against England (starting June 20). Kohli probably wants to give a chance to young players.

Focus on ODIs: Kohli retires from T20Is in 2024 and now wants to give up Tests and focus on ODIs, especially for the 2027 World Cup.

According to sources, BCCI appealed to Kohli to change his decision for the England tour, but Kohli remained firm on his decision. This shows that Virat Kohli Retirement on his own terms, as was always the case in his career.

Was Kohli’s decision in haste? Some experts believe that his experience is needed in the England tour. Especially after the retirement of Rohit and Ravichandran Ashwin (retirement in 2024). But Kohli always acts on his own terms. This is also clear from his decision of May 12. But should this be considered his strategy or should it really be considered his sacrifice to open the way for the youth? It is being said that Virat has a lot of advertising contracts. Advertising contracts are given to any player by earning a name for his performance ability and staying in the media. Due to the continuously falling performance in Test cricket, this could have been affected and the earnings from advertising would also have reduced.
