No more UPI PIN hassles: A major change is about to come in the world of digital payments in India. RBI and NPCI have jointly introduced biometric authentication for UPI payments. This means that the hassle of entering a UPI PIN every time will be over. Simply use your phone’s Face ID or fingerprint scanner and the payment will be made.
This feature is currently in testing phase in some banks and apps, but in the coming weeks this facility will also be available on big platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm.

No More UPI PIN! Now Pay with Fingerprint & Face ID | New UPI Biometric Payment Feature 2025
What is the new UPI Biometric Payment System?
Until now, UPI transactions required entering a PIN. But now, you’ll be able to authenticate payments using your phone’s built-in security system (like Face Unlock or Fingerprint Sensor).
This will be a completely optional feature, meaning those who want to use PIN can do so.
Face authentication will be linked to Aadhaar
If you want to reset or register UPI PIN, now you will be able to complete this process through Aadhaar based Face Authentication.
- Just go to your favorite UPI app (like BHIM, Paytm, GPay).
- Select Aadhaar Face Authentication option.
- The app will take you to the Aadhaar FaceRD Portal.
- There, complete the verification process by scanning your face with the front camera.
After this, you’ll be able to set a new UPI PIN and make UPI biometric payments without any OTP or debit card details.
Rules for making payments through biometrics
NPCI and RBI have set some rules for this feature –
- Transactions up to ₹5000 can be done through biometrics.
- This feature will be auto-disabled if biometrics are not used for 90 days.
- The app must obtain explicit user consent.
- The feature will only work on secure and unrooted devices.
Is Biometric Payment Safe?
Both the RBI and NPCI have clarified that this method is secure and encrypted. Most smartphones today have bank-grade security protocols, so your fingerprint and face data are stored only on the phone, not on a server.
Just like you unlock your phone with Face ID, you can now make payments (UPI Biometric Payments). The fear of forgetting your PIN or having it stolen is gone.
Why was this change brought about?
More than 12 billion UPI transactions occur in India every month.
Millions of transactions fail due to incorrect or forgotten UPI pins.
The biometric method is not only faster but also easier for senior citizens, rural users, and those with low literacy.

When will this feature be available?
This feature is currently in development, but is expected to begin rolling out to all major UPI apps by the end of 2025.
The initial limit is ₹5,000, which may be increased later.
Biometric authentication is making the future of UPI payments even smarter and more secure. There’s no need to remember your PIN, no worry about failed payments. Simply show your face, point your finger—and the payment is complete. This new initiative of Digital India is expected to further strengthen the country’s cashless economy.
